Supporting the Blue Key Campaign

The reasons I choose to support the the UN Refugee Agency’s Blue Key campaign are not complicated. Refugees need basic necessities that many of us who are more fortunate take for granted; namely water, food and shelter. Some refugees spend years, even decades, in displacement camps. So many are traumatized by torture, sexual assault and aggression. The Blue Key campaign helps provide basic services to those in refugee camps who most desperately need them; a school, a health clinic, shelter from the elements for their family. Today, more than 6,000 UNHCR staffers help provide much needed, shelter and care in camps around the world. But much work is still needed–there are 43 million refugees worldwide and more needs to be done to help them escape their plight.

In December 2011, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) will commemorate 60 years of working to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees and internally displaced people.  The goal is for 6,000 U.S. residents – thoughtful, caring people like you — to get a Blue Key. By doing so, you’ll tell the millions of refugees worldwide that they’re not invisible, and our staff that their live-saving work does not go unnoticed.

I urge you to support this cause as well.
